I don't recall when I first met Hugh, it was so long ago. He was already a legend in his own time because of his trailblazing cross-national studies of the epidemiology of dementia. I would say our friendship grew not only out of shared professional interests but also out of a shared sense of humor. Our encounters and interactions have ranged from serious to hilarious, in work contexts and social situations. Hugh has provided wise and patient counsel to me when I was tearing my hair out and taken me seriously before most people did. We have written papers and done presentations together. We have bragged about our respective grandchildren (Hugh had a long headstart there) and privately commiserated about what the world was coming to. I look forward to many more years of our friendship, Hugh. Slàinte Mhath!
