In 2020, the global population witnessed undeniable evidence in the US of racism,
including documented episodes of violence against individuals of color and devastatingly
differential effects of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Though marginalized individuals and
communities have long recognized the detrimental impacts of systemic bias, antiracist
rhetoric and policies are only beginning to gain traction among powerholders in society
at large and in our healthcare institutions. As our healthcare systems and institutions
work to adopt antiracist policies, we need to understand complex factors contributing
to disparities and apply intentionally antiracist lenses to our assessments of evidence
from clinical practice and research inquiries. The study by Perez et al. in this issue
of the Journal provides an excellent opportunity to consider the role of race in our
practice and scholarship.
